It’s POLL Time Baby!

OK We desperately need your help.  As most of you know, we’re building a new house.  We agree on most things in the house, or can easily compromise.  However, our kitchen is proving to be quite a conundrum.  One of us likes the peninsula in the kitchen (design #2), the other doesn’t (design #1).  I just received another from the cabinet maker which is a little bit of a compromise (design #3)

There are good arguments for both ways.  Here are our arguments:

Design #1

Design #1

Design #1:

(there are five photos of design #1, all labeled Kitchen #1)

~allows for more traffic flow through the kitchen area (the dining area is 7 feet deep by 10′ 10″ wide) and there would be approximately 3′ between the end of the peninsula and the refrigerator.

~not limited to the kind of kitchen table and seating you can put into the dining area

~the peninsula adds only 3 feet of counter space

~no butcher block because you can not have a dishwasher below the butcher block

Design #2:

(there are 3 photos of the 2nd design all labeled Kitchen #2)

~Allows for the most efficient use of

Design #2

space

~can use bench seating in the corner to improve traffic flow as well as have additional storage under the

benches

~Three additional feet of useful and practical counter space as well as more cabinet space underneath

~resale value – it looks more aesthetically pleasing, more counter space, more storage space

Option #3 (the comprmise)

You didn’t include the fact that there is only 7 feet between the counter and the wall and you didn’t mention that there is no dining room.

Actually, I did say there is 7 feet between the wall and the peninsula. No, i didn’t mention that there was no dining room. But that wasn’t intentional. I thought it was assumed since it was an eat in kitchen and I called it a “dining area.”

Trust me you want Design #2. The extra 3′ of counter space is a MUST have. On top of that in Design #2 you will have what I call “Junk Drawers” under the peninsula with the larger cabinets for pans over by the stove. No kitchen can have too much storage for junk or counter space.

Design #1 just looked ‘unfinished’, like you ran out of counter money! I wouldn’t worry about the traffic flow thru the section between the peninsula and refrigerator – that would only be a problem if you were to have a lot of people in your kitchen at one time and that will only happen occasionally – you will need the counter space ALL THE TIME!

I would go with which ever would give you cupboard space. We love all of our counter and cupboards. The only thing I notice in #2 is where the dishwasher and sink are located. Are they close together? Will you drip all over to turn to put things in the dishwasher? It doesn’t look like there is much room between the cupboard and where the door of the dishwasher will be. Hard to vision just looking at those pictures. Good luck! Call if you have any questions!

I have to go with Andrew. It’s a guy thing. We are always right when it comes to construction.

I should not approve your comment Matt just because you said that! Men are SO NOT always right about construction! Especially in the kitchen!
